Best Panama Coffee Brands: The Complete Guide to Panamanian Coffee (2026)

Panama may be one of the smallest coffee-producing countries in the world — responsible for less than 0.1% of global output — but when it comes to quality, no other origin comes close. This is the country that produces the most expensive coffee on earth, that has won more competition titles than any other origin, and that is hosting the World of Coffee 2026 and the World Barista Championship in October of this year.

But Panama isn't just about record-breaking Geisha auctions. The country has a rich and diverse coffee culture, from century-old household brands to boutique single-estate roasters. Whether you're looking for a smooth everyday cup or a once-in-a-lifetime Panama Geisha experience, there's a Panamanian brand for you.

I'm Juan Carlos Sosa, founder of Boquete Coffee Traders. I live in Panama City and source these coffees from Panama's finest roasters and producers. Here's my guide to the best Panama coffee brands — and where to buy them online.

How Panama Coffee Is Different

Before we get into the brands, it helps to understand what makes Panamanian coffee unique. Nearly all of Panama's premium coffee comes from the Chiriquí province in the western highlands, grown on the slopes of Volcán Barú at altitudes between 1,200 and 2,000+ meters above sea level. The volcanic soil, cool mountain temperatures, and Panama's unique position between two oceans — creating over 100 distinct microclimates — give the coffee a clarity, sweetness, and complexity that's hard to find anywhere else.

Panama grows several Arabica varietals including Geisha, Catuai, Caturra, Typica, Pacamara, and Bourbon. The country is also a leader in processing innovation — you'll find washed, honey, natural, and anaerobic coffees from virtually every serious producer.

The Best Panama Coffee Brands

Featured — Hacienda La Esmeralda (The World's Most Famous Geisha)

Best for: The ultimate, most exclusive Panama Geisha experience

No name looms larger over Panamanian coffee than Hacienda La Esmeralda. The Peterson family estate ignited the global Geisha movement by winning Best of Panama in 2004, and in 2025 its washed Geisha shattered the world auction record at $30,204/kg. Now, for the first time, you can taste it at home: the Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Gift Box pairs 100g of natural-process and 100g of washed Esmeralda Geisha side by side — jasmine, bergamot and citrus against peach, mango and a jammy, wine-like sweetness. Made to order in Panama and delivered worldwide in 5 days.

Founded by the Franceschi family in Paso Ancho, Volcán, Carmen Estate is one of Panama's most decorated names. Its Washed Geisha took 1st place at the Best of Panama with a record 96.50 points and set the all-time auction record at $10,005/kg. Delicate jasmine, sweet orange, lemongrass, and a clean sugarcane finish — available in very limited quantities.

Café Durán is the oldest and most recognized coffee brand in Panama. Founded in 1907 by Spanish immigrant Esteban Durán Amat — just three years after Panama became a republic and seven years before the Panama Canal opened — Durán has been the coffee Panamanians wake up to for over 115 years.

Durán sources beans from farmers across Chiriquí (primarily Arabica from the highlands) and Coclé, and operates the most modern coffee processing plant in Central America. Their Tradicional blend is a medium roast that's bold, smooth, and deeply familiar to anyone who's spent time in Panama. Their Café de Altura line is a step up — 100% Arabica from higher elevations with a cleaner, more aromatic profile.

If you're a former Panama resident, a Zonian, or someone who fell in love with the coffee during a trip — Café Durán is probably the one you're looking for.

2. Café Palo Alto — Boquete's Beloved Arabica (Est. 1912)

Best for: A smooth, premium everyday coffee with real terroir

If Café Durán is Panama's most popular coffee, Café Palo Alto is Panama's most loved. Grown on the Tedman Family Farm in the highlands of Boquete since 1912, this 100% Arabica coffee is what you'll find in Panama's best hotels, restaurants, and homes.

The medium roast delivers a beautifully smooth, full-bodied cup with notes of chocolate, caramel, and toasted nuts — virtually no bitterness. It was formally launched as a gourmet brand in 2002, and demand surged 40% in the first year alone. Today it's available in Panama, the US, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and through our store worldwide.

This is the coffee I recommend to anyone who wants to experience authentic Boquete coffee without spending Geisha prices. It's exceptional for the price.

3. Finca Lérida — Award-Winning Estate Since 1924

Best for: Competition-level coffee from a legendary estate

Finca Lérida is one of Panama's most historic and decorated coffee estates. Founded in 1924 by Norwegian Panama Canal engineer Tollef Bache Monniche, the estate made history in 1929 when it shipped Panama's first-ever coffee export to Germany.

Today, Finca Lérida is a woman-owned company operated by the Amoruso family. The estate spans five farms at 1,500–2,000 masl and grows Geisha, Catuai, Pacamara, and Typica. Their track record speaks for itself: #1 at the 2001 Best of Panama, #1 coffee in the world at the 2003 SCAA competition in Boston (out of 118 entries), multiple BOP wins in 2017, and a consistent top-10 finisher for over 15 years.

4. Café Unido — Panama's Third-Wave Pioneer (Est. 2014)

Best for: Single-origin specialty roasts and Geisha

Café Unido was born from a simple realization: Panama had the best coffee in the world, but there was no place within the country to properly experience it. In 2014, three friends — including chef Mario Castrellón and head roaster Alberto Bermúdez — opened the first Café Unido in Panama City to change that.

Today, Café Unido is Panama's largest specialty coffee roaster and the country's biggest purchaser of Geisha. They source 100% direct from producers, roast with obsessive transparency, and operate multiple locations in Panama City plus an expanding presence in Washington, DC. Their roasting philosophy is to let the coffee speak for itself — no hiding behind dark roasts.

The farm has won multiple Best of Panama awards and is one of the most environmentally responsible producers in the country. In 2006, Panama's National Environmental Agency named Kotowa the winner of the Year's Environmentally Cleanest Industry award, and UNICEF has recognized their social programs for workers' families since 2002.

Kotowa produces excellent Geisha, Typica, and other varietals from their estates in Boquete and the surrounding highlands. Clean, bright, and meticulously processed.

Best for: Experiencing some of the highest-rated coffees ever produced

The Lamastus family has been growing coffee in Panama for four generations. Their Elida Estate, at extreme altitude in Boquete, has produced some of the most legendary auction lots in BOP history — including the $1,029/lb record-setter in 2019 and the $13,518/kg lot in 2024. Wilford Lamastus Jr. is one of the most innovative and respected producers in the specialty coffee world.

The farm sits at 1,600 meters above sea level and has been producing coffee since 1914. Their Geisha Washed offers the cleanest expression of Geisha terroir — bright jasmine florals, sparkling citrus acidity, and a tea-like clarity that makes it the perfect introduction to Panama Geisha.

Located in the Volcán region on the Talamanca Mountain Range, the farm is one of the most sustainably operated in Panama: powered by 400 solar panels, using mountain spring water for processing, and converting coffee pulp into compost and fuel.

Their Geisha consistently performs well at competitions, and the coffee has a distinctive clarity and brightness that reflects Volcán's unique microclimate.

9. Café Suarez — Four Generations in Alto Quiel (Est. 1900)

The Suárez family has been cultivating Arabica coffee in the Alto Quiel highlands of Boquete since 1900 — making them one of the oldest coffee-growing families in Panama. The story begins with Domingo Suadi, who arrived from the Middle East and planted 70,000 coffee trees on 70 hectares of volcanic soil. Now in its fourth and fifth generation, the family continues the tradition alongside members of the indigenous Ngöbe community. Their Geisha delivers bright citrus, floral jasmine, and a refined acidity that showcases Alto Quiel's exceptional terroir. The Garrido family has been growing coffee in Boquete since 1959, when founder Teodoro Garrido planted the family's first trees. Today the business is led by his daughters Gissell and Liliana from the legendary Mama Cata estate — one of Boquete's oldest farms, dating back to 1911 and sitting at 1,500–1,750 meters in the prized Alto Quiel micro-region, neighboring Hacienda La Esmeralda and Elida Estate.

Mama Cata is the only farm on earth that grows Mokkita — a unique Arabica variety found nowhere else. It was named Coffee Review's #1 coffee of 2021 and won 1st Place Traditional at Best of Panama in both 2020 and 2021 (scoring 91 and 92 points). The family added a 3rd Place Varietals finish in 2025 with their Cantera Farm (92.25 points).

We carry two Garrido coffees from the Mama Cata estate. Their Geisha delivers refined florals, bright acidity, and a clean, sweet finish — the more accessible way to experience this celebrated farm. For the true collector, the rare Mokkita offers a flavor profile found nowhere else on earth. Most Garrido coffee is sold to the Asian market — it's rarely available in North America, which makes both a genuine find for connoisseurs.

Altieri Specialty Coffee began, improbably, with an ice factory. Eugene Altieri moved from the US to Panama in 1973, spent years manufacturing ice, and was then offered two farms in Boquete — which he bought without knowing what they were capable of. He replanted them with Geisha, Typica, Catuai and Caturra, converted the old ice plant into a coffee mill, and by 2014 the family was placing at the Best of Panama. They have been placing ever since.

Two details make this farm special. First, their Geisha seeds were bought directly from the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda — the estate that made Geisha famous in 2004 — so an Altieri Geisha is a direct descendant of the most celebrated lineage in coffee. Second, their eleven plots at Mima and Pipim Estates are each named after one of Eugene's grandchildren.

The Geisha Washed is the flagship: strawberry, melon, jasmine and lemongrass from plots between 1,800 and 2,200 meters. The Typica Washed from Alto Quiel is my quiet favourite and the value pick of the three — caramel, black tea and dark chocolate, the heirloom Arabica variety that every other Arabica descends from, and the only one of the three I would put milk in. The Catuai Natural is the fruit-forward option: stone fruit, berry and tropical, dried in the whole cherry. Read the full Altieri Specialty Coffee story for the whole picture.

Which Panama Coffee Brand Should You Try First?

It depends on what you're looking for:

If you want the classic Panamanian coffee experience: Start with Café Palo Alto ($21) or Café Durán (from $20). These are the coffees Panamanians actually drink every day. They're smooth, balanced, affordable, and will give you a true taste of the country.

If you want specialty-grade estate coffee: Go with Finca Lérida Catuai Washed ($38), Kotowa Arabica ($24), or the Altieri Typica Washed ($42) — an heirloom Typica from a Best of Panama estate, with caramel and dark chocolate in the cup. These are award-winning coffees from legendary estates — a clear step above everyday coffee, but still reasonably priced.

If you want to try Geisha: Browse our full Panama Geisha coffee collection to compare every estate side by side. Our Gran Del Val Geisha Washed ($56) is the most approachable entry point — Geisha's signature floral-citrus complexity in its purest form. For something truly rare, the Garrido Geisha ($64) comes from Mama Cata — the only farm on earth that also grows Mokkita, and a back-to-back Best of Panama winner. The Altieri Geisha Washed ($114) is for the collector: its seeds came directly from Hacienda La Esmeralda, grown at 1,800–2,200 meters. And the Finca Lérida Geisha (from $49) is exceptional from a 100-year-old estate with multiple international titles. If you want an outright Best of Panama champion, the Carmen Estate Geisha ($67) is a strictly limited washed Geisha with a record 96.50-point pedigree.

How to Brew Panama Coffee at Home

For everyday Panama coffees (Café Palo Alto, Café Durán, Café Amistad), any brewing method works — drip, French press, espresso, moka pot, or cold brew. These coffees are versatile and forgiving.

For specialty and Geisha coffees, pour-over (V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave) is the ideal method. Use water at 200°F (93°C), a medium-fine grind, and drink it black to experience the full flavor. If you need a grinder, the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder is a great affordable option.

Frequently Asked Questions About Panama Coffee Brands

What is the best Panama coffee brand?

It depends on what you want. For an everyday cup, Café Palo Alto and Café Durán are the coffees Panamanians drink at home. For specialty estate coffee, Finca Lérida, Kotowa and Altieri are award-winning and reasonably priced. And for the world-famous Geisha variety, Gran Del Val is the most approachable entry point while Carmen Estate and Lamastus (Elida) sit at the very top.

What is the most famous Panama coffee brand?

Café Durán is the most recognized coffee brand in Panama. Founded in 1907, it has been the everyday coffee of Panamanian homes and offices for over a century. Among specialty coffee lovers worldwide, Panama is most famous for its Geisha, grown by estates such as Hacienda La Esmeralda, Lamastus, and Carmen Estate. You can now taste Esmeralda's legendary Geisha at home in our Hacienda La Esmeralda Geisha Gift Box.

Which Panama coffee is best for trying Geisha for the first time?

Gran Del Val Geisha Washed is the best starting point. At an accessible price for a Geisha, it delivers the variety's signature jasmine florals, bright citrus, and tea-like clarity in their purest form. From there you can move up to rarer lots like Garrido Geisha from the Mama Cata estate, the Esmeralda-descended Altieri Geisha, or a Best of Panama champion like Carmen Estate.

What is Altieri Specialty Coffee?

Altieri Specialty Coffee is a family-owned producer in Boquete, founded in 2005 by Eugene Altieri, who converted the family's old ice factory into a coffee mill. Their lots have placed at the Best of Panama since 2014, and their Geisha grows from seeds bought directly from Hacienda La Esmeralda. We carry their Geisha Washed, Typica Washed and Catuai Natural.

Where can I buy authentic Panama coffee brands online?

You can buy all of the brands in this guide directly from Boquete Coffee Traders. We ship every order from Panama itself via FedEx or DHL, delivered worldwide in 5 days, with no middleman and no old warehouse inventory. Free shipping applies on orders over $70.

Why is Panama coffee so expensive?

Panama's premium reputation comes down to terroir and the Geisha variety. High-altitude volcanic slopes around Volcán Barú, cool mountain mist, and over 100 microclimates produce exceptional clarity and complexity. Geisha in particular has broken world auction records repeatedly, reaching over 10,000 dollars per kilo. That said, everyday Panamanian brands like Café Palo Alto and Café Durán remain very affordable.
