The Mama Cata Estate — Where Legends Grow
Mama Cata is one of the oldest coffee farms in Panama, with roots dating back to 1911. The Garrido family acquired the estate in 1997, and it was here that Geisha was first planted decades ago. The farm takes its name from Catalina Fitchet, wife of a previous owner. Originally part of a larger property that included what are now the neighboring Elida and Lerida estates, Mama Cata sits in the heart of Boquete's most prized coffee-growing territory.
The Garrido family has been cultivating coffee in Boquete since 1959, when founder Teodoro Garrido established the family's first farm. Today the business is led by his two daughters, Gissell and Liliana, who continue pushing quality forward. It was also on Mama Cata where the family discovered the rare Mokkita variety — a unique cultivar that earned them back-to-back 1st Place wins at the Best of Panama in 2020 (91 points) and 2021 (92 points). In 2025, their Cantera Farm earned 3rd Place in the Varietal category with 92.25 points.
Flavor Profile — What Does Garrido Gesha Coffee Taste Like?
Grown at 1,500–1,750 meters on volcanic soil enriched with minerals from Volcan Baru, washed with natural spring water, and dried on African beds. The high altitude and cool mountain climate of Alto Quiel produce a Geisha with extraordinary clarity and complexity. Expect a light roast with an elegant floral aroma, bright citrus acidity, jasmine and stone fruit notes, a silky mouthfeel, and a sweet, lingering finish. This is Panama Gesha at its most expressive — from an estate that neighbors the best in the world.
