The farm that discovered Geisha coffee

For decades, a stand of unusual, elongated-bean trees grew quietly on a high, cool section of the estate. In 2004, the family harvested those trees separately for the first time and entered the lot in the Best of Panama competition. Tasting it blind, the judges found jasmine, bergamot and tropical fruit — flavors coffee was not supposed to have. One judge famously said he “saw God in a cup.” That single lot shattered the world price record and started the global Geisha phenomenon. Every Geisha coffee sold anywhere today traces its fame back to this farm. Read the full story in our Hacienda La Esmeralda estate profile.

The world’s most expensive coffee: $30,204 per kilogram

At the Best of Panama 2025 auction, a 20-kilogram lot of Esmeralda washed Geisha scored 98 points and sold for just under $605,000 after 549 bids — $30,204 per kilogram ($13,705 per pound), the highest price ever paid for coffee. A natural Gesha from the same farm scored 97 and fetched $23,608 per kilogram at the same auction. No other coffee farm in the world has ever come close.

Best of Panama 2026: on every podium

At the 30th Best of Panama in 2026, Hacienda La Esmeralda was the only producer to place on all three podiums — 2nd in Geisha Natural (95.50 points), 3rd in Geisha Washed (95.25) and 2nd in Varietals (92.63) — earning the Copa Panamá for the highest accumulated score of the competition.
