Collection: Volcán Coffee

Volcán Coffee — The High, Dry Side of Volcán Barú

Volcán coffee grows on the western slopes of Volcán Barú, Panama's highest mountain, in the district of Tierras Altas in Chiriquí province. If Boquete, on the eastern side, is the valley everyone has heard of, Volcán is the side the Geisha specialists talk about. Farms here sit higher, between roughly 1,400 and 2,200 meters, and the climate is drier and sunnier than Boquete's misty valley. The result is denser beans, slower maturation, and some of the most aromatic, floral and intensely fruited cups in Panama.

I am Panamanian, and I source these coffees directly from the families who grow them. Boquete Coffee Traders carries 14 coffees from four Volcán estates on this page, every one sourced fresh directly from the producer after you order and delivered worldwide in 5 days via FedEx or DHL. Orders over $70 USD ship free to the US, Canada and Latin America (over $150 to the rest of the world).

The Volcán Estates in This Collection

Janson Family Coffee is a three-generation farm in Volcán growing Geisha and Arabica at around 1,700 meters. Their washed and natural Geishas are among the purest expressions of the variety you can buy, and their Arabica, in whole bean, ground and Nespresso-compatible capsules, is one of the best everyday coffees in the country.

Carmen Estate, in Paso Ancho, is a Best of Panama champion: its washed Geisha took first place in 2023 with 96.50 points and sold for $10,005 per kilogram at that year's auction. We carry the estate's Geisha in very limited quantities.

Finca El Pergamino, in Bambito, is the farm that shook the 2026 Best of Panama, taking second place in Washed Geisha with 96.00 points under producer Yaneth de Lucich. Alongside the Geisha, El Pergamino grows an excellent natural Catuai and a washed Bourbon, two of the best-value coffees in our store.

Mama Oti Specialty Coffee is a small family project named for the founder's grandmother, growing Geisha and Caturra at over 1,400 meters. It is one of the most personal coffees we carry: a floral Geisha, a bright Caturra, and a house blend that is the easiest everyday cup on this page.

What Does Volcán Coffee Taste Like?

Expect more intensity and more aromatics than Boquete. Volcán Geisha leads with jasmine and bergamot, then tropical fruit (mango, passion fruit, lychee) and stone fruit, with a silky, tea-like body and a long, sweet finish. The drier climate produces very clean cups with little fermentation character in the washed lots, and vivid, winey fruit in the naturals. Volcán Catuai, Caturra and Bourbon are sweeter and brighter than their lowland cousins, with brown sugar, red fruit and a round body that works in almost any brewer.

Which Volcán Coffee Should You Buy?

For pour-over and black coffee: start with the Janson Family washed Geisha for the cleanest introduction to the variety, the El Pergamino washed Geisha for a 96-point competition farm, or the Mama Oti Geisha for a small-farm cup at a gentler price. Carmen Estate is the bottle you open for a special occasion. All of them are in our Panama Geisha collection too.

For espresso, Moka pot and milk drinks: leave the Geisha for pour-over. The El Pergamino Catuai Natural and Bourbon, the Janson Arabica and the Mama Oti Blend have the body and sweetness that hold up under pressure and milk. Janson's Arabica also comes as Nespresso-compatible capsules.

Volcán vs Boquete: Which Side of the Mountain?

Both sides grow world-class coffee, and the difference is climate rather than quality. Boquete's bajareque mist gives balanced, chocolate-and-citrus cups and the largest number of historic estates; Volcán's altitude and dry air give more delicate, floral, fruit-forward coffees and a higher share of competition Geisha. If you want to taste the two side by side, pair a bag from this page with one from our Boquete coffee collection. Our guide to Panama's coffee regions: Boquete vs Volcán vs Renacimiento goes through altitude, climate and flavor for each.
