Boquete Coffee Tour — Gran Del Val Estate
Couldn't load pickup availability
The Gran Del Val coffee tour is a three-hour walk through a working coffee estate in Los Naranjos, Boquete — on the slopes of Volcán Barú, in the mountains that produce the most celebrated coffee in the world. You will see the coffee varieties growing in the ground, follow the process from cherry to green bean, and finish with a guided tasting of the estate's Arabica coffees, including the world-famous Panama Geisha.
This is not a tourist showroom. Gran Del Val has been farmed by the same family for four generations, since 1914. You are walking the actual farm, with the people who grow the coffee.

What you will do on the tour
The three hours are built around the journey the bean actually takes — from the plant in the soil to the cup in your hand.
Walk the estate and meet the varieties
Most people have never seen a coffee plant, and almost nobody has seen several varieties side by side. Gran Del Val grows five: Typica, Caturra, Catuai, Java and Geisha. You will see how differently they grow — leaf shape, cherry size, how the branches carry fruit — and understand why altitude changes everything. The estate's farms sit between 1,200 and 1,600 metres above sea level, with the Geisha planted highest, where the cold nights and the bajareque mist slow the cherry down and concentrate the sugars.
See the coffee process, start to finish
Picking, depulping, fermentation, washing, drying, sorting. Gran Del Val built Panama's first ecological coffee processing mill in 1997, and it is still where the estate's coffee is processed today. Seeing the washed process happen in front of you is the moment most visitors say the whole thing clicks — you stop thinking of coffee as a product and start thinking of it as agriculture.
One honest note: coffee is seasonal. The Boquete harvest runs roughly from November through March, so picking and the wet mill in full swing are a harvest-season sight — outside those months you will still walk the plants, visit the mill, and enjoy the full tasting, with every stage of the process explained on site.
Taste the coffee, including Geisha
The tour ends the way it should: sitting down to a guided tasting of the estate's 100% Arabica coffees, including Panama Geisha — the variety that made Boquete famous and that regularly sets world auction records. Tasting Geisha where it grows, minutes from the trees it came off, is a completely different experience from opening a bag at home. Jasmine, citrus, a body like tea rather than coffee. You will understand what the fuss is about.
About Gran Del Val: four generations in Boquete
The story starts in 1880, when the French engineer Joseph De Dianous arrived in Panama to work on the Canal. His descendant Gabriel De Dianous founded Farm Gladys in 1914, and the family has grown coffee in these mountains ever since — more than 110 years across four generations. In 1991 Ricardo Fernández Carazo and Teresita de Dianous founded Cafetalera Fernández, the family company that still processes and markets the estate's coffee.
The family farms several estates across the Boquete highlands, at altitudes that range widely — which is why the cup profiles vary so much across the range. This tour visits Finca Gran Paraíso, in Los Naranjos.
| Farm | Altitude |
|---|---|
| Gladys | 1,200–1,300 m |
| Gran Paraíso | 1,300–1,400 m |
| La Fortuna | 1,500–1,600 m |
Gran Del Val has been Rainforest Alliance certified since 1999 and certified by Hiro Coffee of Japan since 2019. The commitment to sustainable processing is not marketing language here — it predates the trend by two decades.
Why book this Boquete coffee tour
Boquete has no shortage of coffee experiences, so here is the honest case for this one. This tour is organized by Boquete Coffee Traders together with the estate itself — we source Gran Del Val's coffee and work with this farm every week, so the people behind your booking actually know the estate, its varieties, and its coffees. The farm is a real working operation, not a demonstration plot built for visitors. And the tasting that ends the tour includes Panama Geisha as standard, not as a paid upgrade.
- Direct booking, direct price: $35 per person, in USD, with no booking-platform markup.
- A genuine fourth-generation estate: the same family has farmed here since 1914 — this coffee plantation tour walks ground with 110 years of history in it.

- Small groups only: maximum 10 people, so you can ask questions and hear the answers.

- Bring a light rain layer. Boquete's bajareque mist can arrive at any hour, in any season. It is part of what makes the coffee good.
- No coffee knowledge required. Complete beginners and obsessive home baristas both get their money's worth.
- English and Spanish. The tour runs in either language — tell us which you prefer when you book.
