Four Generations of Passion:
The Legend of Gran Del Val
From a French engineer's dream on the slopes of Volcán Barú to coffee cups in Japan, Germany, the USA and beyond — this is the extraordinary story of one of Panama's greatest coffee families.
Some coffees are products. Gran Del Val is a legacy. Born on a family farm in the misty highlands of Bajo Mono, Boquete, this extraordinary Panamanian coffee has been cultivated with love and expertise for over a century — and today it is enjoyed by coffee lovers across the world. At Boquete Coffee Traders, we are honored to carry it, and even more honored to bring it directly to your door, wherever you are.
This is the story of the De Dianous family, their legendary farms, and a coffee that has quietly conquered the world one cup at a time.
A Story That Began in 1880
The Gran Del Val story does not begin in 1914, or even in Panama. It begins in France in 1880, when engineer Joseph De Dianous left his homeland to work for the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocéanique — the French Panama Canal Company. Like thousands before him, he came for the Canal. What he found was something far more enduring: a land of extraordinary natural richness, volcanic highlands perfect for growing coffee, and a place his family would call home for generations.
His son Gabriel De Dianous took that connection one step further. In 1914, Gabriel purchased land in the Bajo Mono region of Boquete and founded Farm Gladys — named in honor of his beloved wife. Set at over 1,300 meters above sea level, surrounded by mountain forest, blessed with rich volcanic black soil, natural water springs, and the famous Bajareque mist that drifts through the valley each afternoon, Farm Gladys was destined to produce something remarkable.
"A French engineer came to Panama for the Canal. His family stayed — and built one of the greatest coffee legacies in the history of the highlands."
Over the following century, the De Dianous family — now in its fourth generation — expanded their land, deepened their expertise, and turned Gran Del Val into one of the most respected names in Panamanian specialty coffee. This is a family that has dedicated more than 110 years to a single pursuit: growing the finest coffee possible from the volcanic soils of Boquete.
A Century of Milestones
Every great legacy is built one step at a time. Here is how Gran Del Val grew from a single highland farm into a globally recognized coffee brand:

Three Legendary Farms — One Extraordinary Coffee
Gran Del Val's exceptional quality is no accident. It is the direct result of three distinct farms, each occupying a different altitude on the slopes above Boquete, each contributing its own character to the coffee the family produces.
The original family farm, founded by Gabriel De Dianous in 1914. Located in the heart of Bajo Mono, planted with Typica, Caturra and Catuai varieties in rich volcanic black soil.
A neighboring plantation along the pristine Caldera River. Higher altitude brings greater complexity and a deeper, more layered cup character to the Typica, Caturra, Catuai and Java varieties grown here.
The crown jewel. Located on the slopes of Volcán Barú, shaded by dense avocado trees, where the family's prized Geisha and Typica varieties grow at the highest altitude — producing their most delicate and complex coffees.
Together, these three farms form a single, coherent vision — a vertical journey up the volcano that captures the full range of what Boquete's extraordinary terroir can offer. The House Blend brings elements of all three together into one harmonious, deeply satisfying cup.
What Does Gran Del Val House Blend Taste Like?
The Gran Del Val House Blend is crafted from three of Boquete's most celebrated Arabica varieties — Caturra, Catuai, and Typica — each bringing its own character to the final cup. The result is a medium roast that is rich, balanced, and unmistakably Panamanian.
Medium roast · Caturra / Catuai / Typica · Washed process · Balanced acidity · Medium body · Clean, elegant finish · Rainforest Alliance Certified
Caturra delivers bright citrus acidity and a clean, lively character. Catuai adds sweetness, body, and smooth structure. Typica — the heritage variety that first put Panamanian coffee on the world map — brings depth, elegance, and a lingering finish of chocolate and caramel. Together, under the hands of a family that has been perfecting this blend for generations, they create something greater than any single variety could achieve alone.
How Gran Del Val Reached the World
For most of the 20th century, Gran Del Val's exceptional coffee was known only within Panama. That changed in 1998, when the third generation made the family's first international export to Volcafe in Switzerland — and discovered that the world was hungry for what Boquete had to offer.
Word spread quickly among specialty coffee circles. Importers, roasters, and coffee lovers who encountered Gran Del Val for the first time kept coming back. Today, the brand is recognized and celebrated across the globe:
In 2019, Hiro Coffee of Japan — one of Asia's most respected specialty coffee authorities — independently certified Gran Del Val's quality, safety, and sustainability standards. For a family farm in the highlands of Boquete, reaching the demanding standards of Japan's specialty coffee market is an extraordinary achievement and a testament to the unwavering commitment of four generations of the De Dianous family.
