Best Breville Barista Express Accessories (2026): 8 Upgrades That Fit

Best Breville Barista Express Accessories (2026): 8 Upgrades That Fit

By Juan Carlos Sosa (@thecoffeejuan) | Boquete Coffee Traders

The Barista Express is the machine that has put more people into home espresso than any other, and for good reason: a built-in grinder, a proper 54mm portafilter and a steam wand, all for the price of a mid-range phone. But the accessories in the box are the weak link. The plastic tamper, the dual-wall baskets and the spouted portafilter all hide what your shots are actually doing. The right Breville Barista Express accessories cost a fraction of the machine and do more for consistency than any other upgrade you can make. Below are the eight I would actually put next to an Express, in the order they matter, every one of them sized for the 54mm Breville group.

Everything here fits the Barista Express (BES870), and most of it also fits the Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Express Impress, Bambino and Bambino Plus, since they share the same 54mm portafilter. Where a pick is model-specific, I say so under the card.

A quick word on where these picks come from. I have spent years living and breathing specialty coffee — here in Panama, at the source of some of the most celebrated beans in the world. I work directly with the estates and roasters of Boquete to curate the coffees at Boquete Coffee Traders, and I pull shots on this kind of gear myself. So this is not a list pulled off a spec sheet: it is the gear I would actually put on my own counter, judged by what it does in the cup. IN A HURRY? OUR TOP PICKS

  • Best overall: Normcore 53.3mm Tamper V4.1 — a spring-loaded, self-leveling tamp that clicks at the same pressure every time, sized for the Express's tapered basket.
  • Best upgrade: Normcore 54mm Bottomless Portafilter — watch the shot pour from underneath and diagnose channeling in real time; comes with an 18g basket.
  • Best basket: IMS Precision 18-22g Basket — 616 precision-cut holes for a uniform extraction; needs a bottomless portafilter to fit.
  • Cheapest big fix: Normcore 53.3mm Puck Screen — a mesh disc on top of the puck that evens out the water and keeps the shower screen clean.
  • Best for the built-in grinder: Hands-Free 54mm Dosing Funnel — twist-locks onto the portafilter, sits in the grinder cradle and its front tab triggers the grinder, so nothing spills.
  • Best knock box: Breville Knock Box 10 — brushed stainless, a removable knock bar, and small enough to sit on the drip tray.
  • Essential consumable: Breville BWF100 Water Filters — the genuine filter for the Express's tank; a year's supply at one change every two months.
  • Best cleaning: Breville BEC250 Cleaning Tablets — the tablet the machine's CLEAN ME light is asking for; drop one in the cleaning disc and run the cycle.
The one number to remember: 54mm. Breville and Sage machines use a 54mm portafilter with a tapered basket, so tampers and puck screens are cut slightly smaller (53.3mm) to seat properly, while portafilters, baskets and dosing funnels are labeled 54mm. Standard 58mm accessories will not fit, and neither will the 51mm parts made for De'Longhi (if you own a Dedica, see our guide to the best De'Longhi Dedica accessories instead). Everything below is the Breville size.

What makes a good Barista Express accessory

There is a mountain of 54mm gear on Amazon and most of it is fine, so it helps to know what actually moves the needle in the cup. Three things separate a useful Barista Express accessory from a gadget:

It fits the Breville taper exactly. A tamper that is even half a millimeter off leaves a ring of untamped coffee at the edge of the basket, and that ring is where the water goes. Look for 53.3mm on tampers and screens, and for the words Breville or Sage on portafilters and baskets.

It fixes channeling. Most bad Express shots come from water finding a fast path through the puck, which tastes sour and bitter at once. A calibrated tamper, a puck screen and a precision basket all attack that one problem, and a bottomless portafilter shows you whether it is working.

It works with the built-in grinder. The Express grinds directly into the portafilter, so accessories that respect that workflow, like a twist-on dosing funnel, earn their place every morning. Tools that make the routine slower end up in a drawer.

The eight picks, one by one

Best overall

Normcore 53.3mm Coffee Tamper V4.1

1. Normcore 53.3mm Coffee Tamper V4.1

The plastic tamper that ships with the Barista Express is the single weakest thing in the box, and replacing it is the first upgrade I would make. Breville baskets are tapered, so a true 54mm tamper will not seat properly; Normcore machines this one to 53.3mm so it drops in with almost no gap. The spring releases at a set pressure with an audible click, which takes wrist strength and guesswork out of the tamp, and the leveling collar rests on the basket rim so the puck comes out flat. It ships with 15, 25 and 30 lb springs and a stand. More even puck, fewer sour-and-bitter shots, and it looks the part on the counter.

Fits: 54mm Breville baskets (53.3mm base) | Springs: 15 / 25 / 30 lb | Best for: Consistent tamping

Best upgrade

Normcore 54mm Bottomless Portafilter

2. Normcore 54mm Bottomless Portafilter (18g basket included)

A bottomless (naked) portafilter removes the spouts so you can watch the underside of the basket while the shot pours. On a machine with a built-in grinder this is the best teacher you can buy: an even, honey-colored stream means your grind and prep are right, while spurting or a stream racing to one side tells you exactly what to fix. It is machined to lock into the 54mm Breville group and comes with a non-pressurized 18g basket, so you can leave the dual-wall stock baskets behind for good. It also unlocks the IMS basket below, which is too tall for the stock portafilter. If you want to compare this 54mm option against the 58mm and 51mm versions for other machines, see our full guide to the best bottomless portafilters.

Type: bottomless / naked | Includes: 18g single-wall basket | Best for: Diagnosing your shots

Best basket

IMS Precision 18-22g Filter Basket

3. IMS Precision 18-22g Filter Basket (B62.52TH28E)

The stock Breville basket has a small, irregular hole pattern that restricts flow. This Italian-made IMS basket has 616 evenly spaced, precisely cut holes that let water pass through the whole bed at the same rate, so you can grind a touch finer and pull a sweeter, more transparent shot. It holds 18 to 22 grams depending on roast, which suits the Express's double-shot workflow. One important caveat: it is taller than the stock basket and will not fit the standard portafilter unless you remove the plastic insert, so treat it as a companion to the bottomless portafilter above.

Size: 54mm, 18-22g | Holes: 616 precision-cut | Best for: Higher-flow, even shots

Cheapest big fix

Normcore 53.3mm Puck Screen

4. Normcore 53.3mm Puck Screen (1.7mm, 316 stainless)

A puck screen is a thin stainless mesh disc that sits on top of the tamped coffee. It spreads the incoming water across the bed instead of letting the shower screen jet into one spot, which reduces channeling on the surface of the puck, and it keeps coffee from sticking to the group head, so the machine stays cleaner between backflushes. This 53.3mm Normcore version is sized for Breville baskets and made from 316 stainless. Rinse it under the tap after each shot. For the price of a couple of lattes it is the best value item in this list.

Size: 53.3mm | Thickness: 1.7mm, 150 micron | Best for: Even water contact, clean group head

Best for the built-in grinder

Hands-Free 54mm Aluminum Dosing Funnel with grinder trigger

5. Hands-Free 54mm Aluminum Dosing Funnel (grinder trigger)

The Barista Express grinds straight into the portafilter, and anyone who owns one knows the halo of grounds that ends up on the drip tray. This anodized aluminum funnel twist-locks onto the 54mm portafilter, slides into the grinder cradle on its guide grooves, and its front tab presses the grinder switch for you, so the machine's auto-dose still works with the funnel on. The raised rim means every gram lands in the basket; you can stir with a WDT tool and tamp with it still attached, then twist it off. A dosing funnel is the accessory Express owners buy most for a reason: it makes the daily routine tidier and you stop wasting coffee.

Type: twist-lock aluminum funnel, hands-free grinder trigger | Fits: 54mm Breville portafilters | Best for: A clean, spill-free grind

Best knock box

Breville BEA501BSS Knock Box 10

6. Breville BEA501BSS Knock Box 10

Once you are pulling real shots you need somewhere to knock out the puck, and banging a portafilter on the bin makes a mess and can crack it. Breville's Knock Box 10 is sized for a home counter, holds about ten pucks, and has a removable knock bar so the inner vessel rinses clean. The brushed stainless finish matches the Express, and it is compact enough to store on the drip tray when it is not in use. Not glamorous, but it is the piece that makes a daily espresso habit livable.

Capacity: ~10 pucks | Finish: brushed stainless, removable bar | Best for: Tidy puck disposal

Essential consumable

Breville BWF100 Charcoal Water Filters

7. Breville BWF100 Charcoal Water Filters (6 pack)

Espresso is mostly water, and the Barista Express draws it from a tank with a charcoal filter you are supposed to change every two months. Most owners never do. The genuine BWF100 pack gives you a year's worth: it strips chlorine and off-flavors and slows the limescale that eventually clogs a thermoblock machine. Note that the original Express (BES870), Pro and Infuser use this filter, not the newer ClaroSwiss cartridge used by the Touch and Oracle lines, so check your model before you buy. If your tap water is very hard, see our guide to the best water for coffee and consider a remineralized water instead.

Fits: BES870 / BES878 / BES840 | Pack: 6 filters (about 1 year) | Best for: Cleaner water, longer machine life

Best cleaning

Breville BEC250 Espresso Cleaning Tablets

8. Breville BEC250 Espresso Cleaning Tablets (8 pack)

When the CLEAN ME light comes on, this is what it wants. Drop a tablet into the cleaning disc that came with your Express, lock it into the portafilter, and run the automatic cleaning cycle: it dissolves the rancid coffee oils that build up in the group head and make every shot taste dull and bitter. Breville's own tablets are sized for that cycle and gentle on the seals. Do it every month or so and the machine tastes the way it did on day one. Descaling is a separate job with a separate product, covered in our step-by-step descaling guide.

Type: backflush cleaning tablets | Use with: the Breville cleaning disc | Best for: Clean-tasting shots, long machine life

Which Barista Express accessories should you buy first?

You do not need all eight on day one. If you are building up gradually, this is the order that delivers the most improvement per dollar:

Start here (biggest impact, least money): the 53.3mm calibrated tamper and the hands-free dosing funnel. Together they fix the two things every Express owner complains about, an inconsistent tamp and grounds all over the drip tray, and they cost less than a bag of Geisha.

Add next: the puck screen, then the bottomless portafilter and the IMS basket as a pair. This is the point where you stop guessing and start seeing what the puck is doing.

Keep it running: the water filters and cleaning tablets are not upgrades, they are maintenance the machine was designed around. Skip them and every other item on this list slowly stops mattering. The knock box just makes the whole habit tidier.

One honest note on what is missing: I have not listed a WDT needle tool because the universal one I recommend works on any size, and it is covered, together with a 58mm kit for other machines, in our guide to the best espresso accessories. On an Express it is worth adding between the dosing funnel and the tamp.

How to use them: a better Barista Express workflow

The tools only help if you use them in the right order. Here is the sequence that gets the most out of this kit on an Express:

  • Twist on the funnel and grind. Lock the dosing funnel onto the portafilter, seat it in the cradle and grind an 18g dose into the single-wall basket. Weigh it; the Express's timed dosing drifts as beans age.
  • Break up the clumps. Stir with a WDT tool, then give the portafilter a gentle tap to settle the bed.
  • Tamp until it clicks. Press straight down with the 53.3mm tamper until the spring releases. Keep it square; the collar does the leveling for you.
  • Screen, lock, pull. Drop the puck screen on top, lock in the bottomless portafilter and watch the stream: even and honey-colored is good; spurting means go back and improve your prep or grind finer.
  • Knock and rinse. Knock the puck into the box, rinse the screen and basket, and when the CLEAN ME light comes on, run a tablet through the cleaning cycle.

A precise dose matters as much as good prep, which is where a good coffee scale earns its place. And if the built-in grinder is the wall you keep hitting, the machine pairs very well with a dedicated burr grinder; see our guide to the best espresso grinders. Frequently asked questions

What size accessories does the Breville Barista Express use?

The Barista Express uses a 54mm portafilter with tapered baskets. Buy tampers and puck screens marked 53.3mm (sometimes 53mm or 53.5mm) and portafilters, baskets and dosing funnels marked 54mm Breville. Standard 58mm accessories will not fit.

Which Breville Barista Express accessories should I buy first?

Start with a calibrated 53.3mm tamper and a dosing funnel: together they fix the two things Express owners struggle with most, an inconsistent tamp and grounds spilling from the grinder. Add a puck screen next, then the bottomless portafilter and IMS basket once you want to dial in seriously.

Is a bottomless portafilter worth it on the Barista Express?

Yes, especially while you are learning. Removing the spouts lets you watch the extraction and see channeling in real time, which makes it far easier to correct your grind and puck prep. It also lets you use taller precision baskets like the IMS that do not fit the stock portafilter.

Does the IMS basket fit the stock Barista Express portafilter?

Not as shipped. The IMS B62.52TH28E basket is taller than the stock basket and only fits the standard portafilter if you remove the plastic insert. The simplest route is to pair it with a 54mm bottomless portafilter.

Which water filter does the Barista Express take?

The original Barista Express (BES870), Barista Pro and Infuser use the Breville BWF100 charcoal filter, changed every two months. The Barista Touch, Oracle and newer models use the ClaroSwiss cartridge instead, so check your model number before ordering.

How often should I run the clean cycle and descale?

Run the cleaning-tablet cycle when the CLEAN ME light comes on or roughly once a month with daily use. Descaling is a separate job with a descaling solution every two to three months depending on your water hardness.
