Compact espresso machine pulling a shot from a bottomless portafilter onto a small scale, with a tamper, puck screen, dosing funnel and knock box beside it

Best Breville Bambino Accessories (2026): 8 Upgrades That Fit

By Juan Carlos Sosa (@thecoffeejuan) | Boquete Coffee Traders

The Breville Bambino and Bambino Plus are two of the most popular first espresso machines you can buy: tiny, quick to heat and able to make genuinely good espresso. What comes in the box holds them back, though. The light plastic tamper, the pressurized baskets and a drip tray too small for most scales make it easy to get a drinkable shot and hard to get a great one. The right Breville Bambino accessories fix exactly those weak points. Below are the eight I would put next to a Bambino, in the order they matter, every one of them sized for its 54mm group.

Everything here fits both the Bambino (BES450) and the Bambino Plus (BES500). Because Breville uses the same 54mm portafilter size on the Barista Express and Barista Pro, most of these also fit those machines.

A quick word on where these picks come from. I have spent years living and breathing specialty coffee — here in Panama, at the source of some of the most celebrated beans in the world. I work directly with the estates and roasters of Boquete to curate the coffees at Boquete Coffee Traders, and I pull shots on this kind of gear myself. So this is not a list pulled off a spec sheet: it is the gear I would actually put on my own counter, judged by what it does in the cup. IN A HURRY? OUR TOP PICKS

The one number to remember: 54mm. The Bambino uses a 54mm portafilter. Tampers and puck screens for it are sold as 53.3mm or 53.5mm, because they must be slightly smaller than the basket to fit inside it. Standard 58mm cafe accessories will not fit, and neither will the 51mm gear made for De'Longhi machines.

What makes a good Bambino accessory

Amazon is full of 54mm gear, and most of it is fine. What separates a useful Bambino accessory from a drawer-filler comes down to three things:

It fits the Bambino exactly. A tamper that is too small leaves a ring of loose coffee at the edge of the basket, and that ring is where the water escapes. Look for 53.3mm or 53.5mm on tampers and puck screens, and 54mm Breville compatibility on anything that attaches to the group.

It moves you off the pressurized basket, or makes the most of it. The dual-wall baskets create pressure artificially so that even stale pre-ground coffee makes a foamy shot. Once you own a real espresso grinder, a single-wall basket is the biggest step up in the cup. If you do not, focus on consistency: tamping, weighing and cleaning.

It suits a small machine. The Bambino is only about 7 inches wide, with a small drip tray and very little room around it. Compact tools that keep the workflow tidy earn their place every morning. Oversized kit designed for 58mm cafe machines does not.

The eight picks, one by one

Best overall

Normcore 53.3mm Tamper V4.1

1. Normcore 53.3mm Coffee Tamper V4.1

The tamper that comes with the Bambino is light plastic, and it is the first thing I would replace. It is hard to tamp level with it, and an uneven puck is the most common reason a Bambino shot runs fast on one side and tastes sour overall. The Normcore V4.1 has a 53.3mm stainless base, which is the right size for 54mm Breville baskets, and a leveling collar that rests on the basket rim so the tamp comes out flat. An internal spring gives an audible click at a set pressure, and three springs come in the box. You stop thinking about how hard to press and every puck comes out the same, which is what makes dialing in possible.

Fits: 54mm Breville baskets | Base: 53.3mm flat, spring-loaded | Best for: Consistent tamping

Normcore 54mm Bottomless Portafilter

2. Normcore 54mm Bottomless Portafilter (basket included)

The Bambino ships with pressurized (dual-wall) baskets that are forgiving with pre-ground coffee but hide what is happening in the puck. A bottomless portafilter removes the spouts, so you watch the shot pour straight from the underside of a single-wall basket. An even, honey-colored stream means your grind and prep are right; spurting or a stream racing to one side tells you what to fix. Normcore's 54mm version fits the Bambino and Bambino Plus as well as the Barista Express and Barista Pro, and it comes with a basket. One caution: a non-pressurized basket needs a proper espresso grinder. With supermarket pre-ground coffee it will gush, so keep the stock handle for that. For other sizes and brands, see our full guide to the best bottomless portafilters.

Fits: Bambino, Bambino Plus, Barista Express, Barista Pro | Includes: single-wall basket | Best for: Diagnosing your shots

Best basket

IMS B62.52TH28E Precision Basket

3. IMS B62.52TH28E Precision Filter Basket (18-22g)

If you do not want a new portafilter yet, the next best upgrade is the basket inside it. IMS makes precision baskets with tighter tolerances on the holes than stock baskets, which helps water pass through the puck more evenly. The B62.52TH28E takes an 18 to 22 gram dose and is listed as compatible with the Bambino, the Bambino Plus and the other 54mm Breville machines. It drops straight into your stock portafilter or the bottomless one above. Like any single-wall basket, it needs freshly ground coffee from a real espresso grinder.

Dose: 18–22g | Fits: 54mm Breville portafilters | Best for: More even extraction

Cheapest big fix

Normcore 53.3mm Puck Screen

4. Normcore 53.3mm Puck Screen (1.7mm, 316 stainless)

A puck screen is a thin stainless mesh disc that sits on top of the tamped coffee. It spreads the incoming water across the bed instead of letting the shower screen jet into one spot, and it keeps coffee off the group head so the machine stays cleaner. The Normcore 53.3mm screen is 1.7mm thick, made of 316 stainless steel, and fits 54mm Breville baskets. If you dose at the top of your basket's range, drop your dose by half a gram so the puck still has headspace. Rinse it under the tap after each shot.

Size: 53.3mm | Thickness: 1.7mm, 316 stainless | Best for: Even water distribution

Best dosing funnel

54mm Aluminum Dosing Funnel

5. Hands-Free 54mm Aluminum Dosing Funnel

A dosing funnel is a ring that sits on top of the basket and catches the grounds that would otherwise land on the counter. This aluminum funnel is sized for 54mm Breville portafilters, so you can grind straight into it, stir with a WDT tool and tap to settle the bed, then lift it off before you tamp. The Bambino has very little working space around it, and keeping the grounds contained makes the whole morning routine calmer and cleaner.

Material: aluminum | Fits: 54mm Breville portafilters | Best for: Spill-free dosing and WDT

Best scale

TIMEMORE Black Mirror Nano Scale

6. TIMEMORE Black Mirror Nano Espresso Scale

A scale is how you stop guessing. Weighing the dose in and the shot out tells you exactly what to change when a shot tastes off. The catch on the Bambino is space: the drip tray is small, and most coffee scales are too big to sit under the cup. The Timemore Black Mirror Nano measures about 3.9 by 4.5 inches and under an inch tall, reads to 0.1 gram up to 2 kilograms, starts its timer automatically when the first drops land, and charges over USB-C. It also works for pour-over, so it will not be wasted if you brew both. For bigger options, see our guide to the best coffee scales.

Size: about 3.9 x 4.5 in | Accuracy: 0.1g up to 2kg | Best for: Weighing shots on a small drip tray

Best knock box

Breville Knock Box 10

7. Breville Knock Box 10

Once you are pulling real shots, you need somewhere to put the spent pucks. Knocking them into the kitchen bin is messy, and tapping a portafilter on a hard edge can damage it. Breville's Knock Box 10 has a rubber-covered bar to knock the portafilter against and a removable container that is easy to empty and rinse. It is compact enough for a small counter next to a small machine, and it matches the Bambino's look.

Type: knock box with removable bin | Fits: any portafilter | Best for: Tidy puck disposal

Essential consumable

Breville BES007 Descaler

8. Breville BES007 Descaler (4-pack)

The Bambino does not take a water filter in its tank, so scale builds up faster than on machines that do. Descaling on schedule is what keeps it heating quickly and brewing at the right temperature for years. Breville's own BES007 descaler comes as four single-use packets; the listing names the Bambino Plus BES500 among the compatible machines. It is phosphate-free and biodegradable. Dissolve one packet in the tank with water and follow the descaling steps in your Bambino manual, then rinse. For a full walkthrough, see our guide on how to descale an espresso machine.

Which Bambino accessories should you buy first?

You do not need all eight on day one. The right order depends on one question: do you grind your own beans on a real espresso grinder?

If you use pre-ground coffee: stay on the stock pressurized baskets and put your money into consistency — the 53.3mm calibrated tamper, the Nano scale and the descaler. That alone makes the Bambino's shots noticeably more even and keeps the machine healthy.

If you have an espresso grinder: go straight to the bottomless portafilter (or, on a tighter budget, the IMS basket in your stock handle), then add the tamper, the dosing funnel and the puck screen. This is where the Bambino stops being an appliance and starts making real espresso. If you are still shopping for that grinder, start with our guide to the best espresso grinders.

Once you pull a shot or two every day: add the knock box. It sounds like a luxury until you have emptied a dozen pucks into the kitchen bin.

One honest note on what is missing: I have not listed a WDT tool, because the ones I recommend work on any basket size and are covered in our guide to the best espresso accessories. I have also skipped a milk pitcher, since both Bambinos come with one. If you own a Barista Express instead, see our Breville Barista Express accessories guide, and if you have a De'Longhi Dedica, everything changes size — our De'Longhi Dedica accessories guide covers the 51mm versions.

A better Bambino workflow, step by step

Here is the sequence I would use with this kit on a Bambino fitted with the bottomless portafilter and a single-wall basket:

  • Preheat properly. The Bambino heats in seconds, but the portafilter does not. Lock the empty handle in and run a short blank shot so the metal is hot before you dose.
  • Dose into the funnel. Put the funnel on the basket and grind 17 to 19 grams into it, weighing on the scale. Small changes in dose change the shot more than most people expect.
  • Stir and settle. Break up clumps with a WDT tool, then tap the handle gently to level the bed. Lift the funnel off.
  • Tamp until it clicks. Press straight down with the 53.3mm tamper until the spring releases. The collar does the leveling for you.
  • Screen, lock, pull. Drop the puck screen on top, lock the handle in, set the cup on the scale on the drip tray and watch the stream. Aim for roughly twice your dose in the cup: about 36 grams out from 18 in. Even and honey-colored is good; spurting means a finer grind or better prep.
  • Knock out and clean. Knock the puck into the knock box, rinse the screen and wipe the group. Descale on schedule, more often if your water is hard.

Water matters as much as prep, especially on a machine without a filter. Our guide to the best water for coffee explains what to use. Still deciding whether the Bambino is the right machine? Compare it in our guide to the best budget espresso machines.

Frequently asked questions

What size accessories does the Breville Bambino use?

The Bambino and Bambino Plus use a 54mm portafilter. Buy 53.3mm or 53.5mm tampers and puck screens, and 54mm Breville baskets, funnels and portafilters. Standard 58mm and 51mm accessories will not fit.

Do Barista Express accessories fit the Bambino?

Mostly, yes. The Bambino, Bambino Plus, Barista Express and Barista Pro all use the same 54mm portafilter size, so 54mm Breville tampers, baskets, puck screens, funnels and bottomless portafilters generally fit all of them. Check the listing for the Bambino by name before you buy.

Which Bambino accessories should I buy first?

If you use pre-ground coffee, start with a 53.3mm calibrated tamper, a compact scale and a descaler. If you own an espresso grinder, start with a 54mm bottomless portafilter or a precision single-wall basket, then add the tamper, a dosing funnel and a puck screen.

Is a bottomless portafilter worth it on the Bambino?

Yes, if you grind fresh on a proper espresso grinder. It pairs with a single-wall basket instead of the pressurized one and lets you see channeling as it happens. With pre-ground supermarket coffee it will run too fast, so keep the stock portafilter for that.

What scale fits under the Breville Bambino?

The Bambino has a small drip tray, so look for a compact espresso scale. The Timemore Black Mirror Nano measures about 3.9 by 4.5 inches, which is small enough to sit on a compact espresso machine drip tray under the cup.

How often should I descale a Breville Bambino?

The Bambino does not use a water filter, so descale roughly every two to three months, and more often if your water is hard or you pull several shots a day. Follow the descaling steps in your Bambino manual.
