Collection: Boquete Coffee

Boquete Coffee — Beans from the Highlands of Volcán Barú, Sourced Direct

Boquete coffee is grown in a small valley on the eastern slopes of Volcán Barú, Panama's highest peak, at elevations between roughly 1,200 and 1,900 meters. Cool nights, volcanic soil, and the bajareque — the fine misting rain that drifts across the valley most afternoons — slow the ripening of the cherry and concentrate its sugars. This is the valley where Hacienda La Esmeralda first separated a Geisha lot in 2004 and changed what the world was willing to pay for coffee, and it is still home to most of the estates that win the Best of Panama competition every year.

I am Panamanian, and I visit these farms often. Boquete Coffee Traders carries 40 coffees from 11 Boquete estates on this page — every one of them sourced fresh directly from the producer after you order, not from a warehouse, and delivered worldwide in 5 days via FedEx or DHL. Orders over $70 USD ship free to the US, Canada and Latin America (over $150 to the rest of the world).

The Boquete Estates in This Collection

Boquete is a village of families, and nearly every bag here carries a family name. Hacienda La Esmeralda (Peterson family) holds the world auction record for coffee, offered here as a natural + washed Geisha gift box. Lamastus Family Estates farms Elida Estate in Alto Quiel, among the highest coffee land in Panama, and is the most decorated producer in Best of Panama history. Finca Lérida, founded in 1924 by Norwegian engineer Tollef Mønniche, won the 2026 Best of Panama Natural Geisha category. Altieri Specialty Coffee took the 2026 Varietals title with heirloom Typica and Catuai.

The valley's historic names are here too. Café Palo Alto (Tedman family, since 1912) is the smooth, chocolatey Arabica Panamanians grew up on. Kotowa traces its roots to 1913. Gran Del Val has farmed in Boquete since 1914 and offers Geisha, Pacamara, Typica, Catuai and a house blend. Don Pepe Estate dates to 1898 and grows rare Java and Bourbon alongside Catuai and Caturra. Café Suárez has grown coffee in Alto Quiel since 1900, and Garrido Specialty Coffee (since 1959) is the family behind Mokkita, one of the rarest varieties in Panama.

Not every great Panamanian coffee is from Boquete. Janson Family, Carmen Estate, Finca El Pergamino and Mama Oti farm the Volcán and Tierras Altas side of the mountain; you will find them in our Volcán coffee collection, and our guide to Panama's coffee regions: Boquete vs Volcán vs Renacimiento compares the two sides of Barú.

Which Boquete Coffee Should You Buy?

For pour-over and black coffee: Boquete is Geisha country. Start with a washed Geisha from Finca Lérida, Gran Del Val or Don Pepe Estate for jasmine, citrus and a tea-like body, or step up to Elida and Esmeralda for the competition-grade cup. Our Panama Geisha collection has the complete list.

For espresso, Moka pot and milk drinks: skip the Geisha. Café Palo Alto, the Gran Del Val House Blend and the Boquete Catuai lots from Elida, Finca Lérida and Altieri have the chocolate and caramel body that holds up to pressure and milk.

For something you cannot find anywhere else: Don Pepe Estate Java, Gran Del Val Pacamara, Altieri Typica and Garrido Mokkita are heirloom and rare varieties that almost never leave Panama.

Where Is Boquete and Why Is Its Coffee So Good?

Boquete sits in Chiriquí province in western Panama, about 40 minutes north of David. The town is at roughly 1,200 meters; the farms climb from there to nearly 1,900 meters in Alto Quiel, Jaramillo, Palmira and Alto Lino. Volcanic soil, a long, cool maturation, and shade from native trees give Boquete coffee its signature: high sweetness, clean acidity and distinct florals in the Geisha. The region's annual Best of Panama competition and auction, judged by international panels, is why Boquete is consistently rated among the best coffee origins in the world.
