Altieri Specialty Coffee Geisha Washed 250g from Callejon Seco, Boquete, Panama

Altieri Coffee Panama: The Family Estate Winning Best of Panama

By Juan Carlos Sosa | Boquete Coffee Traders

Some of Panama's greatest coffee stories begin with a plan. Altieri coffee began with an ice factory and a leap of faith. Altieri Specialty Coffee is a family-owned producer from Boquete whose lots have been placing at the Best of Panama competition year after year — and whose Geisha traces its seeds directly to Hacienda La Esmeralda. In this post I will tell you the family's story, what makes their farms special, and how you can taste Altieri coffee at home, delivered worldwide in 5 days.

The Story Behind Altieri Coffee

Altieri Specialty Coffee was founded in 2005 by Eugene Altieri, an Italian-American entrepreneur who moved to Panama back in 1973. For years the family ran an ice manufacturing business — coffee was not part of the plan. Then Eugene was offered two farms in Boquete and bought them without knowing their potential for specialty coffee. As he tells it himself, he had no idea what he was doing.

What happened next is the kind of story we love here in Panama: the farms were replanted with Geisha, Typica, Catuai, and Caturra, and within a decade Altieri lots were placing at the Best of Panama competition — they have been earning awards there since 2014, including recent top-three finishes. Today Eugene has stepped back, and the second generation — his children, including Anna Lynn and Francisco — runs the operation alongside a professional farm team.

From Ice Factory to Coffee Mill

My favorite detail of the Altieri story: when the family committed fully to coffee, they converted their old ice manufacturing facility into their processing mill. A building designed for cold storage turned out to be remarkably well suited for handling coffee, and in recent years they added a dedicated cupping lab. It is a very Panamanian kind of reinvention — practical, family-driven, and quietly excellent.

Two Farms, Eleven Plots Named After Grandchildren

Altieri grows coffee on two estates on the eastern slopes of Volcán Barú, bordered by the cloud forests of the national park. Mima Estates, in Callejón Seco and Alto Quiel, sits between roughly 1,700 and 2,200 meters and is home to their Geisha, Typica, and Catuai. Pipim Estates, in Alto Lino, grows their Caturra at lower elevation. The farms are divided into eleven plots — and each plot is named after one of Eugene's grandchildren. Dilgo, for example, is the nickname of his grandson Diego, whose plot holds the oldest Geisha trees on the farm, planted in 2007.

Geisha With Esmeralda Roots

Here is a detail serious coffee lovers will appreciate: Eugene purchased his original Geisha seeds from the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda — the estate that introduced Geisha to the world by winning Best of Panama in 2004. So when you brew an Altieri Geisha, you are tasting a direct descendant of the most famous coffee lineage on Earth, grown in the same cool, misty microclimate where Pacific and Atlantic winds collide over volcanic soil.

Altieri Coffee You Can Buy Online

At Boquete Coffee Traders we carry both sides of the Altieri range, roasted to order and delivered worldwide in 5 days:

Altieri Geisha Washed — 250g is the flagship: an award-winning washed Panama Geisha from Callejón Seco with the floral, tea-like elegance that made this variety legendary. If you want to understand why washed Geisha tastes this way, my new guide to washed, natural, and honey processing explains it.

Altieri Catuai Natural — 250g is the accessible entry point: a fruit-forward natural-process Catuai from the same Boquete terroir at a fraction of the Geisha price.

If you are comparing Geishas, the Carmen Estate Geisha — a Best of Panama champion from Volcán — makes a beautiful side-by-side tasting partner, and my Geisha flavor guide will help you put words to what you taste.

Which Altieri Coffee Should You Try First?

If this is your first ultra-premium Panama Geisha, start with the Geisha Washed and brew it black as pour-over — it is the purest expression of what made the family famous. If you prefer sweeter, fruitier cups or want to try Altieri without the flagship price, the Catuai Natural is one of the best-value natural-process coffees in our store. Either way, every bag is roasted to order in Panama and delivered in 5 days.
