Oro Moreno Chocolate: Panama's Finest Artisan Chocolate — Now Available Online

If you've visited Panama, you've probably seen it. In the gift shops of Casco Viejo. At Cacao Bar Selection in Obarrio. In the display case of a boutique hotel. A beautifully wrapped chocolate bar with unmistakably Panamanian packaging — bold, colorful, and crafted with a level of care you can taste the moment it touches your tongue.

That's Oro Moreno — Panama's most iconic artisan chocolate brand.

And if you're reading this from outside Panama, wondering how to get your hands on it again — you're in the right place. At Boquete Coffee Traders, we ship Oro Moreno directly from Panama to your door, anywhere in the world.

What Is Oro Moreno?

Oro Moreno is a bean-to-bar artisan chocolate brand founded in Panama City in 2013 by Yoshiris Peña — a Venezuelan-born chocolatier who fell in love with Panamanian cacao and dedicated her life to transforming it into world-class chocolate.

The name "Oro Moreno" translates to "dark gold" — a fitting description for the fine-flavor cacao that grows in the humid lowlands of Bocas del Toro, Panama's Caribbean archipelago. This cacao has been cultivated by indigenous farming communities for generations, and it produces chocolate with a complexity, fruitiness, and depth that mass-produced chocolate simply cannot match.

Yoshiris's story is remarkable. She grew up surrounded by sweets — her mother was a pastry chef in Venezuela — and studied both human resources management and culinary arts before moving to Equatorial Guinea in Africa. From there, her heart led her to Panama, where she spent two years researching Panamanian cacao before launching Oro Moreno. Today, the brand is recognized as Panama's first artisan chocolate laboratory working exclusively with 100% Panamanian cacao, and it has become one of the country's most beloved gourmet brands.

Why Oro Moreno Chocolate Is Special

100% Panamanian Cacao from Bocas del Toro

Every Oro Moreno bar starts with Cacao Fino de Aroma (fine-flavor cacao) from the province of Bocas del Toro. This Caribbean region on Panama's northern coast has the perfect conditions for growing exceptional cacao: rich tropical soil, heavy rainfall, natural shade from surrounding forest canopy, and a tradition of organic, small-scale farming that has been passed down through indigenous communities for centuries.

Fine-flavor cacao represents only about 5% of the world's total cacao production. It's prized for its aromatic complexity — producing chocolate with fruity, floral, and nutty notes that you simply won't find in commodity cacao from West Africa. Bocas del Toro's cacao is among the finest in the Americas.

True Bean-to-Bar Process

Oro Moreno controls the entire process from raw cacao bean to finished chocolate bar. They select the best beans, roast them in small batches, grind, conch, temper, mold, and hand-wrap every single bar. This level of control means they can bring out the specific flavor characteristics of each batch of cacao — something that's impossible in industrial chocolate production.

Their products contain no preservatives, no chemical additives, and no gluten. The ingredient lists are remarkably short: cacao paste, cacao butter, cane sugar, and sometimes soy lecithin. That's it. Many of their bars are vegan.

Proudly Panamanian

Oro Moreno isn't just chocolate — it's a celebration of Panamanian identity. Their packaging features designs inspired by Panama's culture, traditions, and natural beauty. Their "Recuerdo de Panamá" gift boxes are one of the most popular souvenirs tourists take home. Every bonbon is hand-painted one by one. The brand has become synonymous with premium Panamanian craftsmanship.

With over 31,000 Instagram followers and a dedicated factory and shop in Panama City, Oro Moreno has grown from a small chocolate laboratory into one of Panama's most recognized gourmet brands — a woman-owned business built on passion, quality, and an unwavering commitment to Panamanian cacao.

How to Pair Oro Moreno Chocolate with Panama Coffee

One of the best things about buying from our store is that you can pair Oro Moreno chocolate with authentic Panamanian coffee — something you can't do anywhere else online. Here are my favorite combinations:

Oro Moreno 90% + Café Palo Alto: The bold, intense dark chocolate paired with the smooth, caramel sweetness of Café Palo Alto. The coffee's chocolate notes echo the bar, creating a seamless tasting experience.

Oro Moreno Cashew & Salt + Finca Lérida Catuai Washed: The salted cashew bar with a clean, fruity Catuai. The salt lifts the coffee's natural sweetness — try it, you'll be surprised.

Oro Moreno 41% Milk & Coffee + Finca Lérida Geisha: The creamy coffee chocolate alongside a floral, tea-like Geisha. Two very different expressions of Panamanian flavor that complement each other beautifully.

Oro Moreno Dark & Ginger + Gran Del Val Geisha Honey: The warm ginger spice with the honeyed sweetness and jasmine aromatics of the Geisha Honey. An extraordinary pairing.

The Perfect Panamanian Gift

Oro Moreno bars make an incredible gift on their own — but paired with a bag of Panama's finest coffee, they become something truly special. If you're looking for a unique present for a coffee lover, a chocolate enthusiast, or someone who loves Panama, combine any Oro Moreno bar with one of our coffees and add a bar of I Love Panama Chocolate — Barú (Geisha Coffee) for the ultimate Panamanian tasting experience.

Orders over $70 qualify for free worldwide shipping — and building a coffee-and-chocolate gift set is one of the easiest ways to hit that threshold. For more ideas, see our guide to the best Panama chocolate brands.
