How Much Caffeine Is in Geisha Coffee? The Real Numbers per Cup

By Juan Carlos Sosa (@thecoffeejuan) | Boquete Coffee Traders

How much caffeine is in Geisha coffee? About the same as any other Arabica: roughly 80 to 130mg in an 8 oz (240ml) cup, depending on how much coffee you use and how you brew it. Geisha is prized for aroma and flavor, not for being strong or weak, and the idea that a $10,000-per-kilo coffee must be loaded with caffeine (or, the opposite myth, that it is naturally low in caffeine) is simply not true.

I source coffee from Panama's finest producers and roasters, and I get this question every week from customers buying their first Geisha. Here is the honest answer, with numbers.

Caffeine in Geisha coffee: the short version

  • 8 oz pour-over or drip (15g coffee): about 80 to 130mg of caffeine.
  • Single espresso (18g in, 36g out): about 60 to 80mg.
  • Cold brew, diluted to normal strength: similar to hot coffee, 90 to 140mg per 8 oz.
  • Geisha cascara (coffee cherry tea): far lower, usually a fraction of a cup of coffee.

For comparison, an 8 oz cup of black tea has about 40 to 70mg, and a single Nespresso capsule delivers about 55 to 65mg.

Why Geisha has the same caffeine as other Arabica

Caffeine content is set by species first and everything else a distant second. Coffea arabica beans contain roughly 1.2 to 1.5 percent caffeine by dry weight; Coffea canephora (Robusta) contains around 2.2 to 2.7 percent, nearly double. Geisha is an Arabica variety, originally from Ethiopia's Gori Gesha forest and made famous in Panama, so it falls squarely in the Arabica range. Within Arabica, differences between varieties such as Geisha, Catuai, Caturra and Typica are small, usually a few tenths of a percent, and are swamped by how you brew.

What does change with Geisha is everything you taste around the caffeine: the jasmine, bergamot and stone fruit that make it worth the price. If that is what you are after, read what Geisha coffee tastes like and why Geisha coffee is so expensive.

The five things that actually change the caffeine in your cup

1. Dose

More grams of coffee, more caffeine. A 15g pour-over and a 22g pour-over of the same Geisha differ by roughly 50 percent in caffeine. If you want a gentler cup, use less coffee, not a different variety.

2. Brew ratio and time

Caffeine dissolves early and easily, so most of it is extracted in any normal brew. A long, hot immersion (French press) pulls slightly more than a fast pour-over from the same dose; the difference is real but modest.

3. Roast level

Roasting barely destroys caffeine. By weight, light and dark roasts are nearly identical. By volume, a scoop of light-roast Geisha contains slightly more caffeine because the beans are denser. Most Panama Geisha is roasted light to medium to protect its aromatics, so if you measure by scoop rather than scale, you may get a touch more caffeine than from a dark roast. Our guide to light vs medium vs dark roast covers this in detail.

4. Processing

Washed, honey and natural Geisha all contain essentially the same caffeine. Processing changes sweetness, body and fruit, not stimulant content. If you want to taste that difference, the Gran Del Val Panama Geisha Gift Set has the same Geisha processed three ways.

5. Cup size

The obvious one. A 12 oz mug of Geisha has 50 percent more caffeine than the 8 oz figures above.

Does Geisha feel stronger?

Many people say a cup of Geisha feels lighter than their usual coffee, and a few say it feels stronger. Both are perception, not chemistry. Geisha is typically roasted lighter and brewed as pour-over, which produces a tea-like body, so it drinks light even at full caffeine. On the other hand, a clean, sweet cup goes down quickly, and a second cup of Geisha is very easy to justify. That second cup is where the extra caffeine comes from.

Geisha cascara: the low-caffeine option

If you want the Geisha experience with much less caffeine, cascara is the answer. It is the dried fruit of the coffee cherry, brewed like a tea, and it contains a fraction of the caffeine of brewed coffee: enough to notice, not enough to keep you up. Elida Estate, the Lamastus family farm that won Washed Geisha at Best of Panama 2026, sells the cascara from its Geisha trees. Elida Estate Geisha Cascara, 240g, $36. Read our explainer on what cascara is and how to brew it.

Is Geisha a good coffee for people sensitive to caffeine?

Not because of its caffeine content, which is normal. But Geisha is a good choice for sensitive drinkers for a different reason: because it is so aromatic and sweet, a small 6 oz cup brewed with 10 to 12g of coffee is completely satisfying, and that cup carries only 60 to 80mg. You get the full experience from a smaller dose. If acidity rather than caffeine is the issue, see our guide to low acid coffee.

FAQ: caffeine in Geisha coffee

Does Geisha coffee have more caffeine than regular coffee?

No. Geisha is an Arabica variety and contains the same 1.2 to 1.5 percent caffeine by weight as other Arabica coffees. Robusta has nearly twice as much.

How much caffeine is in a cup of Geisha coffee?

About 80 to 130mg in an 8 oz pour-over or drip cup made with 15g of coffee, and about 60 to 80mg in a single espresso.

Is Geisha coffee low in caffeine?

No. It often feels lighter because it is roasted light and brewed as pour-over, but the caffeine is normal. Geisha cascara, the dried cherry, is the genuinely low-caffeine option.

Does light roast Geisha have more caffeine than dark roast?

By weight they are nearly identical. By scoop, light roast has slightly more because the beans are denser. Weigh your coffee and the difference disappears.
