Finca Lérida Coffee: Over 100 Years of Award-Winning Excellence from Boquete, Panama
When people ask me which Panamanian coffee estate best represents the soul of Boquete, I always come back to Finca Lérida. This is the estate that put Panama on the coffee map — literally. It was Finca Lérida that shipped Panama's very first coffee export to Germany back in 1929, and it's been producing world-class specialty coffee ever since.
As someone who lives in Panama and works directly with the country's best roasters, I can tell you: Finca Lérida coffee is as good as it gets. And through Boquete Coffee Traders, you can now order it online and have it shipped directly to your door, anywhere in the world.
The History of Finca Lérida: From the Panama Canal to World-Class Coffee
The story of Finca Lérida begins with a Norwegian engineer named Tollef Bache Monniche. He arrived in Panama in 1907 to work on the construction of the Panama Canal — specifically on the design of its emergency gates. After retiring in 1924, Tollef and his wife Julia moved to the highlands of Boquete, where they purchased a small property they named "Lérida" after the city in Spain.
There, in the cool misty slopes of Volcán Barú, Tollef built a house by hand in the Norwegian countryside style and planted the estate's first coffee trees. He was also an inventor — he designed and patented a device called the "Sifón," which separates ripe coffee cherries from unripe ones during processing. That device is still in use at Finca Lérida today, and variations of it have been adopted by coffee farms worldwide.
By 1929, Finca Lérida exported its first shipment of Panamanian coffee to Germany, marking the beginning of Panama's reputation in Europe as a producer of exceptional, exotic coffee. Over the following decades, the estate grew into one of the most respected names in Central American coffee.
Today, Finca Lérida is a woman-owned company operated by the Amoruso family under Ronella Enterprises. The estate encompasses five farms spread across altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 meters above sea level, creating the ideal conditions for growing some of the world's finest arabica coffee.
What Makes Finca Lérida Coffee So Special?
It starts with the terroir. Finca Lérida's farms sit on the slopes of Volcán Barú in the Boquete highlands, in the province of Chiriquí, Panama. The deep, rich volcanic soil, combined with heavy seasonal rains, consistent sun exposure, and a dry harvest season, creates the perfect growing conditions for specialty-grade arabica beans.
At these elevations — particularly at the main Finca Lérida Estate in Alto Quiel (1,600–2,000 masl) and the Esplendorosa Estate in Jaramillo (1,550 masl) — the cool mountain air slows the ripening process. This allows the coffee cherries to develop deeper, more complex flavors over time. It's one of the reasons high-altitude Panamanian coffee is so highly sought after by specialty buyers worldwide.
Varietals Grown at Finca Lérida
Thanks to its diverse microclimates across five farms, Finca Lérida grows several exceptional arabica coffee varietals:
- Geisha (Gesha) — The legendary varietal that changed the specialty coffee world. Finca Lérida's Geisha is known for its intense floral aroma, with notes of jasmine, bergamot, and tropical fruit. It's delicate, complex, and utterly unforgettable.
- Catuai — A smooth, balanced varietal with notes of bittersweet chocolate, nuts, cherries, almond, and passion fruit. Finca Lérida's Catuai is one of their most beloved coffees, particularly for espresso lovers.
- Pacamara — A bold, structured coffee with deep notes of dark chocolate, spice, and a lingering finish. It's full-bodied and rich — a favorite among those who like their coffee with character.
- Typica — One of the original arabica varietals, prized for its clean cup profile and balanced sweetness.
Processing Methods
Finca Lérida uses multiple processing methods to bring out different flavor characteristics in their beans:
- Washed (Lavado) — Produces a clean, bright cup with citrus clarity and floral elegance. This is the method that won Finca Lérida first place in the 2017 Best of Panama Traditional Washed category.
- Honey — Creates a creamy, full-bodied coffee with a honeyed sweetness in the finish.
- Natural — The coffee cherry is dried whole, producing bold, wine-like, fruity flavors with incredible intensity.
- Anaerobic — An innovative technique where cherries are fermented in sealed tanks for extended periods, creating unexpected and unique flavor profiles.
Finca Lérida's Award-Winning Legacy
Finca Lérida isn't just another coffee farm — it's one of the most decorated estates in Panama's history. Here are some of the highlights:
- 2001: First Place, Best of Panama (BOP)
- 2003: #1 at the SCAA Competition in Boston — named the best coffee in the world out of 118 entries from around the globe
- 2017: First Place, Best of Panama — Traditional Washed category (Moi Honey lot, 89.735 cumulative points)
- 2017: Second Place, Best of Panama (El Príncipe del Café lot, 89.559 cumulative points)
- 2020: Fourth Place, Best of Panama
- Consistent Top 10 finisher at the Best of Panama competition for over 15 years across Geisha, Caturra, and Catuai varietals
The Best of Panama (BOP) is one of the most prestigious specialty coffee competitions in the world. It's organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama (SCAP) and judged by international cupping experts from the United States, Asia, Europe, and Australia. Winning the BOP — or even placing in the top 10 — is a mark of extraordinary quality.
And Finca Lérida hasn't just won once. They've earned multiple first-place finishes and have been a consistent presence among Panama's absolute best coffees for over two decades. That kind of track record doesn't happen by accident — it's the result of generations of care, knowledge, and dedication to the craft.
Buy Finca Lérida Coffee Online
Until recently, getting your hands on Finca Lérida coffee outside of Panama wasn't easy. Most of their competition-winning lots sell at auction to specialty roasters, and their retail availability has been limited internationally.
That's where we come in. At Boquete Coffee Traders, we work directly with Panama's top coffee producers to bring you fresh, authentic Panamanian coffee — shipped straight from the source.
Here's what we currently carry from Finca Lérida:
- Finca Lérida Geisha Coffee (250g) — The crown jewel. Floral, complex, and unlike anything else you've ever tasted in a cup of coffee.
- Finca Lérida Catuai Washed (500g) — A consumer favorite and an outstanding espresso bean, with notes of bittersweet chocolate, nuts, cherries, almond, and passion fruit.
Every order ships directly from Panama via FedEx or DHL and arrives at your door in approximately 5 business days. We also offer free shipping on orders over $70.
How to Brew Finca Lérida Coffee at Home
To get the most out of these exceptional beans, here are a few tips:
For the Geisha: Use a pour-over method (like a V60 or Chemex) to highlight the delicate floral and fruit notes. Keep your water temperature around 200°F (93°C) and use a medium-fine grind. Avoid dark roasting — Geisha shines brightest at a light to medium roast.
For the Catuai Washed: This coffee is incredibly versatile. It makes a fantastic espresso — rich, smooth, and balanced — but also works beautifully as a French press or drip brew. Use a medium grind for drip and a fine grind for espresso.
If you don't have a grinder at home, I'd recommend investing in a quality hand grinder like the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder. Grinding your beans fresh right before brewing makes an enormous difference in flavor and aroma — especially with specialty-grade coffee like Finca Lérida.
More Than Coffee: The Finca Lérida Experience
Finca Lérida is also home to a boutique eco-tourism hotel, nestled within the estate's 294 acres of private cloud forest reserve. It borders La Amistad International Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the top birdwatching destinations in all of Central America.
If you ever visit Boquete, a stay at Finca Lérida is an unforgettable experience. You can tour the coffee plantation, walk through the cloud forest, spot rare birds like the Resplendent Quetzal, and of course — drink freshly roasted coffee grown steps from your room.
But you don't have to travel to Panama to taste what makes this estate legendary. You can order Finca Lérida coffee online right here, and we'll bring Boquete to you.
