Mama Oti Coffee: A Panamanian Granddaughter's Tribute in Every Cup

By Juan Carlos Sosa | Boquete Coffee Traders
Every Panamanian I know has a grandmother who was never far from her thermos of coffee. Mama Oti coffee is a brand built on exactly that memory. Mama Oti Specialty Coffee is a 100% Panamanian brand founded by barista Danuvis "Danu" Pedreschi and named after her grandmother — a beloved Veraguense matriarch, mother of ten, who taught respect and discipline with unconditional love and started every day with coffee in hand. In this post I will share the story behind the brand, what makes their lots from Volcán and Renacimiento special, and how to try Mama Oti coffee at home, delivered worldwide in 5 days.
The Grandmother Behind Mama Oti Coffee
The brand takes its name from a real woman. In Río de Jesús, in Panama's Veraguas province, everyone knew her affectionately as Mama Oti. Her children and grandchildren remember her always accompanied by her thermos of coffee — her daily source of energy and strength. When her granddaughter Danuvis Pedreschi built a specialty coffee brand, she built it as a tribute: to her grandmother, and to all the Panamanian grandmothers whose love was poured one cup at a time.
As a father raising my own children here in Panama, this is the kind of story that makes me proud to carry a brand. Coffee in our country is not just an export — it is family memory.
A Barista's Journey Through Coffee Country
Danu Pedreschi's specialty coffee journey began in 2015 and took her through the coffee farms of Colombia, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras — and of course Panama. Out of that journey came Mama Oti Specialty Coffee, with a clear mission: select rigorously, work hand in hand with Panamanian producers, and help people — starting with Panamanians ourselves — understand the true value of the coffee grown in our highlands.
The lots are grown, harvested, and processed on family farms in the Chiriquí highlands at over 1,400 meters above sea level — the cool, volcanic terroir that makes western Panama one of the world's great coffee origins.
Volcán and Renacimiento: A Different Side of Panama Coffee
Most Panama coffee you find online comes from Boquete. Mama Oti looks west — to Volcán and to Renacimiento, the remote frontier region near the Costa Rican border that produces exceptional lots but rarely reaches international buyers. In fact, the Mama Oti Geisha is currently the only Renacimiento coffee in our store, which makes it a fascinating side-by-side against any Boquete Geisha. If you want to understand how these zones differ, read my full guide to Panama's coffee regions: Boquete vs Volcán vs Renacimiento.
Mama Oti Coffee You Can Buy Online
We carry three Mama Oti lots at Boquete Coffee Traders, each roasted to order and delivered worldwide in 5 days:
Mama Oti Geisha — 250g is the flagship: a single-origin Panama Geisha from a small family farm in Renacimiento, available in both washed and natural versions. Trying one of each is one of the best ways to taste how processing changes a coffee — my guide to washed, natural, and honey processing explains exactly what to look for.
Mama Oti Caturra — 250g is a bright, approachable single-origin Caturra from Volcán — a wonderful everyday cup with highland character.
Mama Oti Blend — 250g combines Caturra and Geisha into a balanced, affordable introduction to the brand.
And if the Geisha bug bites you, compare it against a Best of Panama champion: the Carmen Estate Geisha from Volcán. My Geisha flavor guide will help you describe what you find in each cup.
Which Mama Oti Coffee Should You Try First?
If you are curious about Renacimiento terroir or already love Geisha, start with the Geisha — washed if you prefer florals and clarity, natural if you want fruit and sweetness. If you want a daily drinker with a story behind it, the Caturra or the Blend are the way in. Whichever you choose, you are supporting a young Panamanian woman's tribute to her grandmother — and small family farms in two of our least-known coffee regions.
